A level crossing is a grade-level intersection between the road and the railway tracks.
In order to increase the safety of the rail and road system, the FS Italiane Group has been engaged for years in a programme to remove level crossings, and increase the safety of rail and road mobility, the efficiency of the rail service, and a smooth transition to road mobility.
It is within this framework that the programme to suppress level crossings is being implemented throughout the Country. Level-crossing elimination works, many of which are entrusted to IFR, require a high and specific know-how. Indeed, when designing and constructing replacement works such as overpasses or underpasses, it is necessary to take into account the orographic and hydro-geological conditions of the territory, the level of urbanisation of the area, and any archaeological or landscape constraints.
In Italy, the number of level crossings is steadily decreasing, but most accidents at level crossings are due to a lack of respect for the rules or to haste, distraction and incorrect behaviour.
FS Group has set in place many actions to promote the adoption of a safe behaviour and to make citizens aware of the rules to follow: among these, the campaign launched in April 2023 by the Infrastructure Business Unit and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport "Regole. Una sicurezza per la tua sicurezza", in cooperation with RFI and Anas.
