The project for doubling and speeding up the Bracciano-Viterbo line was presented by the Lazio Region as part of the requests for improvement, efficiency and development of the infrastructure, related to RFI’s 2020 Technical Round Table.

Furthermore, it was included in Annex 2 to the Strategic Document of Rail Mobility 2022 (DSMF) under 'Technical-economic feasibility projects and feasibility studies'. The project concerns the Bracciano-Viterbo Porta Fiorentina section on the Cesano di Roma-Viterbo Porta Fiorentina line, a 45 km single-track section that currently provides about 36 trains per day.

The objective is to analyse the functional development needs for increasing the capacity of the Bracciano-Viterbo line, also based on the evolution of the related infrastructures and services. The study showed that the implementation of the track-doubling project will bring benefits not only functional, but also in terms of sustainability.

The functional benefits concern:

  • Significant speeding up of the Viterbo-Rome connections;
  • Expansion of the FL3 train service to the city of Viterbo with a frequency of up to 15 minutes. When fully operational, between 108 and 144 trains are expected to travel on the Bracciano-Viterbo route.

In terms of sustainability, on the other hand, the implementation of the intervention will make it possible to:

  • Increase the reliability and safety levels of the line, including by eliminating some level crossings;
  • Improve accessibility to stations and stops on the line by raising the platforms to 55 cm above rail level, to allow flush access to trains, and by building subways or overpasses;
  • Create the conditions for a modal shift from road to rail, with the aim of decongesting existing road links and reducing the environmental impact of car emissions;
  • Enhance the area's artistic and cultural heritage by favouring tourist mobility through better connections with the coastal basins and Lazio’s.
